SUMMER TRAVEL STYLE // CASUAL

This week on Edit & Etc. I will be talking about summer travel style, and all the pieces I like to wear when I am on the go! To kick things off, I am starting with the ‘casual’ look, my go-to warm weather  travel ensemble. It’s pretty simple really – flats, denim, a striped tee, and a trench! Everything you need to be put together and stay comfortable and casual. Let’s start from the bottom and move up. First up, flats.

I always start with footwear when I am putting together my travel outfits. For casual travel, that means flats. I tend to favor ballet flats or loafers when I travel casually, but, depending on the destination, or if I have a meeting immediately upon arrival, I will switch it up and go with something just a bit more dressed up, like a pointy toe flat or designer mule, or something even more casual, like an espadrille. The flat I choose will then dictate they style and wash of denim I wear.

Cropped denim that hit just above the ankle are always my choice for wearing with flats. With my typical loafers or ballet flats, to keep things classic and casual, I tend to favor a skinny blue jean without a heavy wash pattern (as seen here). If I am wearing something a flat that is a bit more dressed up, like those gorgeous bow-embellished point-toe flats above, I will favor a skinny white or black jean with stretch, or a blue jean in a very dark rinse (as seen here). Conversely, if I choose a beach-y espadrille, I can get away with wearing more baggy fit denim with a heavy wear pattern and destruction, to keep it super relaxed. In any of those flat/jean combinations mentioned, you’ll have the option of adding my favorite casual travel top of all-time, the striped tee!

The striped tee has always been my trustiest companion for summer travel style. In terms of color, over the years I have found that multi colored stripes and brighter colors back to white to fall more on the relaxed end of the casual spectrum (such as this tee), while black and white stripes in particular can be a bit more dressed up (seen here). Navy stripe options fall somewhere in the middle, being the most classic and versatile of the bunch. The silhouette of a striped tee can have a big effect on your casual outfits as well. The classic boat neck and long sleeve numbers can be worn with nearly anything, but feel a bit more relaxed to me- not to mention keep me warm on flights I always find to be too cold. A deeper scoop neck is feminine and perfect with a more relaxed jean. More modern versions, such as a high cut short sleeve, or off-placed stripe, can add a slight edge, and read a bit more dressed up, therefore best with black skinnies.

Once set from head-to-toe, I always top off my casual travel looks with a timeless trench (as seen here). Trench coats are both polished and practical, and like all the other items on this list, can be dressed up or down depending on the pieces they are paired back to. The trench is a versatile coat that can compliment a look, or be the standout piece, all while staying casual and appropriate for travel. This season, I am favoring the more unexpected, in color, fabrication, and detailing. You will notice in my picks above that there is a cashmere piece, a antique rose color beauty, and a fun option with a more dramatic sleeve. Of course, there are some classic picks as well (all at differing price points). So, no matter where your summer travel style outfits falls on the casual spectrum, there is a perfect trench waiting to accommodate!
